Your questions answered…. How do I become a burlesque performer?
Well good morning ladies and gentlemen,
It is Wednesday, which is the best day of the week for us lot at HOTB – BLUELESQUE BURLESQUE day. The day where we spend the evening with our bodacious burlesque students and we absolutely love it.
Anyhoo, we are answering one of your frequently as questions and today it is “How do you become a burlesque performer?”
As we love burlesque so very much, we want everyone to have the opportunity to be involved within this beautiful art form and we believe that burlesque should be inclusive and accessible to all.
This being said, becoming a burlesque performer is so much more than whacking on a corset and stockings, it is an extremely valuable profession that has morphed and transgressed through the years (we are believers of the origins in Ancient Greece – Aristophanes anyone?)
So today we would like to share with you our advice about becoming a performer that we have lived and breathed over the years of our burlesque journey. Sure there is plenty of other ways that you can go about becoming a performer, heck there is probably millions more but these three are important to us and have been a catalyst within our careers.
Know your art form
Burlesque’s history is so rich and vibrant with a plethora of information available on the internet/academia/magazines etc that it would be a shame to miss out on learning about the origins and the legendary performers that have created what burlesque is today.
Books available from Amazon such as:
Horrible Prettiness by Robert C Allen (Academic)
Burlesque Legendary Stars of the Stage by Jane Briggerman
Even wikipedia offers a great insight into burlesque!
This is a heavily debated area within burlesque with regards to dedicated burlesque lessons. We believe burlesque lessons are an incredible start and insight into the world of burlesque. We teach techniques, choreography, history and abundance of other burlesque shenanigans, however, we are not biased and just mean burlesque lessons. Take lessons in art, dance, theatre, acting, sewing, craft, language etc etc to widen your scope and assist in creating your own burlesque persona… this leads onto our next and final tip
Be original & Research
There are billions of people in the world but only one of you. You are unique! Everything about you is unique so embrace your uniqueness – YOU ARE AWESOME SAUCE!!! If you are creating your burlesque persona/acts, firstly research to ensure that your idea is unique or takes a unique spin on an already pre-existing idea (be careful with this one) and secondly, always play to your strengths and no one elses because your strengths are yours and only yours – embrace them.
We hope that this has offered you an insight and an answer to the question today, or failing that, a bit of burlesque banter for Wednesday morning. If you do have any more questions, we are more than happy to hear from you. Give us a bell on firstname.lastname@example.org
